Mobility -> Greener cars in general
Formula 1 vs World Solar Challenge

Today, the Monday after the huge Formula 1 event in Melbourne, I wonder if there are any similar events going on with alternative fuels.

The Formula 1 circus has been an excellent tool for the big car brands to develop new technology and test it thoroughly before using it in standard cars, brands such as Ferrari, Jaguar, BMW and Mercedes has been doing this for some time.

Is any similar event, that promotes research in the sustainable mobility sector? Yes there is, the most exciting one I have seen is the Adelaide to Darwin World Solar Challenge (3000 km!!). 2007 will be the 10th edition over 20 years and the development of the cars is really interesting. New regulation of the cars has been put i place this year, to slow the cars down and to make the safer and more like standard vehicles. The event takes place on the 21st of October and last day to enter the competition is on the 30th of May, lets see if the media coverage will be the same as for the Formula 1.

Do you fellow Ecoprofilers know of similar events?

It may come as a surprise but the Ausies have just unveiled the car that is 11,000 kmph check this up. We seem to be far in IT or speed. Okay if in population. I agree. But that is what brought China to the booming economy now and new hi-tech as is.
Jet engine tested at 10 times speed of sound

An experimental jet engine has been successfully tested at speeds of up to 11,000 km per hour, or 10 times the speed of sound, during trials in Australias outback, defense scientists said on Friday.

The experimental scramjet engine is an air-breathing supersonic combustion engine being developed by Australian and US defense scientists that researchers hope will lead to super-high speed flight.

And which are the environmental implications of widespread scramjet use? My guess: Worse than most other innovations we have seen so far.
