Food -> Meat
Should we eat meat?

Johan Erlandsson  [2006-08-30  21:18]   #1784
Meat production has increased fivefold the last 50 years and gives rise to environmental problems like high energy consumption, climate gas emissions and unnecessary land use. Should we eat meat? What do you think?

No, we should not eat meat. It is cruel and wasteful. the amount of resources to raise one kilo of meat is enormous. the waste products polute the atmoshere and water. meateating is a scourge.

I disagree. We should eat meat in small quantities. Some of my friends are very carnivorous and eat meat in every meal. I think that is wrong. To become healthy, high-functioning individuals, we need to have a balanced diet - and we dont need too much meat. We can always substitute beans or other foods for protein.

Meat is necessary or we would all become very skinny and cease to exist. Being anorexic is not my favourite piece of the cake.

NO! we dont need meat at all, the whole idea of breeding animals in crowded areas, pumping them full of anti-biotics and steroids, growth hormones, and even genetically modifying animals is very disturbing. It really amazes me how people think that these chemicals wont leek back into your body as you consume them.

The important thing to do is maintain a balanced diet, yes we do need proteins but they can be sourced from lots of natural foods (hemp, nuts, beans etc).

Going vegetarian for me has been one of the most amazing experiences. I urge you to do the same.

I totally agree that this kind of breeding is bad, but I would also like to point out that there could be advantages of keeping animals as well. Kept in a sound way, for the animals as well as for the environment, grazing animals promote biodiversity. And biodiversity is like an insurance for the ecosystem.

We would do better without the meat industry you are talking about, but we should keep some grazing animals out in the open lanscape to maintain it open, I think. At least in the type of temperate climate we have in Sweden, the situation may be quite different in other parts of the world. Well, we dont need as many animals to keep an open landscape as is bred in the industry of today. But those we keep - why not eat them? In addition they produce the natural fertilizer that should be used to the production of vegetables, cereals etc in a sound ecocycle.

To base most of the food we eat on grown things, is, if theyre available and affordable, just a matter of habit, I think.

Some more facts to feed the debate:

Livestock make up 18 % of global greenhouse gas emissions -more than the transport sector. See enclosed report.

I dont believe we should eat meat and the reason is simply this: the livestock production industry has become too large and too great of economic importance to many countries, including Canada and the U.S. Because of this, the feedlot industry has been allowed to increase in size and scale to the point where the effects on the environment are quite significant. The vast amounts of manure produced by these operations cause excessive levels of nutrients in soils and water bodies, decreasing their quality, and severly altering aquatic ecosystems to the point where they cease to function. There is also an increased risk of the e.coli bacteria contaminating the water you drink and bathe in.
Additionally, there is recently more evidence that hormones injected into feeder cattle are having adverse affects on humans who consume meat and dairy products.
Supporting the livestock industry means supporting such practices as the ones I have listed above, whether you mean to or not. So please, think twice before you choose what you eat. In regards to Nabeels comment if you dont eat meat you will not become excessively skinny and die. There are many alternatives so this wont happen :)

Well I guess my point about being skinny is ridiculous - Ive seen loads of vegetarians who are fat as hell.

But I do think eating meat is a necessity. So the population has grown to the extent that meat now requires scientific methods to increase quantity. We as sensible humans only need to cut down on our meat intake. We were solely living on meat a few centuries ago. Hunters and gatherers we were. I dont think we can go down to zero consumption.

What do you propose we do with these animals if we stop eating meat altogether?

Im all food eating meat, btw. I normally eat meat once or twice a week. I believe that we are omnivores and we need the protein from meat. We can use vegetable protein, but animal protein is more like our own proteins. Now I for sure dont eat commercial meat, as that stuff is disgusting. Putting all those chemicals in there cant possibly be good for anything/anyone.

But to stop altogether? For moral reasons? I dont think so. Its great if you feel that way, each person has different requirements to feel whole in themselves. And to tell the truth, I think our bodies talk to use in this fashion. If it feels right to you, its probably your body saying its the right thing. But others bodies might tell them differently.

I dont think that consuming meat in th quantities that most ppl do is good for them, but they were raised to eat this way, and they probably dont really know any differently. Or they could be addicted to the chemicals in the commercial meats...? Its highly possible. That the industry is putting soem chemicals in the meat to make people crave it.

I dunno about all the science, but Im strongly for the Circle of Life Were in that circle, too.

"meat is necessary or we would all become very skinny and cease to exist"

i have to disagree because i dont eat meat, and im not skinny.

yeah! vegetarianism has nothing to do with becoming anorexic! quite the opposite as vegetarians more often than not pay attention to the food they eat and its usually a lot healthier hense being thin.

Whats wrong with you guys! Stop being redundant. I reiterate:

I think we can all agree that we dont have to be only carnivores or just vegetarians - that eating both meat and veggies contributes to the ecosystem. What we need is a balanced diet where not just the nutritional components are balanced, but also the consumption of meat and vegetables.
